Visit the beautifully sited ruin of Hailes Castle, a fortified manor, hidden away in the pretty valley of the River Tyne and dating back to the 1200s. It was associated with the Wars of Independence and Mary Queen of Scots.
James Hepburn, 4th earl of Bothwell, is most famous for becoming the third husband of Mary Queen of Scots. He was probably born at Hailes Castle in 1535. Bothwell and Mary stayed at Hailes Castle on their way from Dunbar to their wedding at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh on May 5, 1567. The marriage was deeply unpopular in Scotland with subsequent events, which historians still debate, leading to his downfall, death and loss of the castle.
The castle passed into various hands before being attacked by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1650, effectively ending Hailes’ days as a noble residence.
