A paradise for lovers of history where the opening battle of the first Jacobite Rebellion took place in a magnificent wooded river gorge which is now a rich treat for nature lovers. The steep sided glen carved by the River Garry through the surrounding high ground was, and still is, strategically placed for movement between the Highlands and the Lowlands.
The 2,500 strong Jacobite force under Viscount Dundee achieved victory over the 4,000 government troops of General Hugh Mackay whose new tactics of having bayonets, attachable to muskets, together with inexperienced troops largely contributed to their defeat. The Visitor Centre tells the story and should not be missed.
In autumn, when the colours are spectacular, admire the view from the footbridge, see the famous Soldier’s Leap, the spot where a Redcoat soldier leapt 5.5m across the raging River Garry, fleeing the pursuing Jacobites. While in the area spot the wildlife, including red squirrels, woodpeckers and pine martens.
