The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, part of National Galleries Scotland, is where you can come face to face with the people who shaped, plundered, grew, educated, promoted, and tore apart Scotland. Most of them are historical figures but today there are more being added who are still alive. Now is your chance to go give them a good talking to or simply learn more about our history and culture.
The collections are housed in a spectacular restored Neo-Gothic palace which has a fabulous gilded frieze of Scotland's history surrounding the entrance hall. This alone can keep you occupied for some time trying to recognise the characters and where they fit into history.
The gallery was nominated for the Art Fund Prize in 2012 after completing an expensive refurbishment during which the curators pondered long and hard on how to adopt the Victorian idea of a portrait gallery of worthy Scots, well some of them were, to the 21st century. Not to be missed!
Opening Hours: Daily, 10am – 5pm (Thu until 7pm)
Closed 25 – 26 Dec
