Verdant Works is a world class visitor attraction which relates the history of Dundee’s association with jute and how, at its peak, 50,000 people in the city toiled to supply much of the world’s demand for jute products. This industrial textile heritage is set in an atmospheric Mill building, brilliantly restored to recreate the working conditions of the past.
On your self-led museum exploration, at your own pace, you will find out how jute was harvested in India and transported to Dundee’s bustling docks and experience the deafening roar of the machines and see the jute processed from raw fibre to woven cloth.
For those interested in the rise of the Unions and the Suffragettes you will find out how the mill girls reversed the traditional gender roles in Dundee.
Stop by the gift shop and café for a well-earned refreshment with a piece of Dundee cake that has your name on it!
