The start of the West Lothian Highland Games takes place the evening before the actual games, by maintaining the tradition of "Beating the Retreat" through the streets of Bathgate, a ceremonial march which has its origins in ancient military custom.
This sets the mood for the next days activities comprising Highland Dancing, Athletics, Heavy Events, Piping displays and in the afternoon there is the traditional Cairnpapple Hill Race, run from Meadow Park to the top of Cairnpapple Hill and back. The winner receives a cash prize and the Cairnpapple Cup. The formidable Heavy Events show the strength and skills in putting the shot, putting the stane, throwing the 28lb weight, throwing the 16lb Scots hammer, throwing the 56lb weight for height and the popular tossing the caber.
A range of stalls selling foodstuffs, clothes and toys, plus fairground games and children's rides, ensure visitors are fed with local produce, watered and kept happy.
