This museum is a wee gem, the sort of place you might want to pass an hour but find yourself so absorbed you only return to reality when the staff ask you to leave as it is way past closing time.
The Bell Pettigrew Museum is St Andrews University's zoology museum and is a rare survival of the Victorian teaching era reflecting a wonderful old atmosphere.
The displays are arranged to allow the evolutionary and taxonomic relationships between animals to be clearly understood. The Museum holds examples of several extinct species, including the dodo, solitaire, moa, passenger pigeon, Tasmanian wolf, heath hen (USA) and St Kilda house-mouse.
Pride of place in the collection are fossil fish from Dura Den in Fife which provided material evidence of the development of life but not quite the stepping stone between water and land dwelling creatures.
Andrew Carnegie's cast of a hind leg of a Diplodocus is on display fascinating the kids.
Opening Hours: Summer vacation (1 July -31 August).
2-5pm Tuesday and Friday afternoons only.
Other times welcomed by appointment.
