Kilmun Arboretum is unlike any other with its mini forests of different tree species, some of which you will be surprised to find in Scotland. Nearly 100 years ago after many forests were depleted after the first world war the Forestry Commission decided to test a variety of tree species which could be planted, and their success monitored in the cool humid west coast environment of the Cowal Peninsula.
With way-marked paths to explore you will come across colourful maples to rare conifers and Australian eucalypts and the ever-delightful monkey puzzle trees in their mini forests.
Out of about 300 hundred trials half survived that you can identify today. Explore the different trails and see how many you can identify or simply enjoy the pleasant experience.
This magical glen offers an enchanting woodland experience. Follow the path past tumbling waterfalls and shallow rock pools into the hidden depths of the gorge, the more spectacular after a rainfall. Ferns and fungi thrive in the cool damp atmosphere.
