A great deal of ceremonial and colourful pageantry accompanies clan proceedings, and at the Aboyne Games is no exception. Having formed in 1867, Aboyne is regarded as "The Traditional Highland Games" which continues to attract thousands of visitors to witness the annual display and competition of Scottish culture in the heart of Royal Deeside, one of the most scenic parts of Aberdeenshire.
Imagine the Pipe Bands marching through the village of Aboyne, the spectacle has started, then Chieftain's Banner is raised before their entry, then the competitions begin.
Piping with Marches, Strathspeys and Reels continue while Heavy Events of Tossing the Caber, throwing Weights over the Bar, Throwing Hammers, Putting Stones and Tug O'War exhaust you just being a spectator.
The lighter side of the games feature Highland Dancing with Highland Flings, Sword Dancing, Seann Truibhas and more. A must is the Fiddle Competition, not a normal feature of Highland Games.
Opening Hours: Be there by 11:00 for a full days experience
