The Braemar Gathering is a traditional Highland Games and a Royal Affair, being attended by the reigning Monarch and members of the Royal Family.
The Heavy Events, throwing the Hammer, Putting the Stone, Tossing the Caber and Throwing Weights never fail to excite with athletes from all over the world trying to beat long standing records.
Individual bands and Massed Bands march through the village to the Games Park for competition as well as just showing off with their spectacular displays. The solo piping competitions run throughout the day in categories for Pibroch, Marchs, Strathspeys & Reels. The Highland Dancing competition provides a fine display of intricate traditional dances like the Highland Fling and the Sailors Hornpipe.
Top military athletes compete in the Tug o’War being hotly contested since 1955.
The climax to the event is the spectacle of the Gathering Hill Race, a staggering 3 miles distance and a climb of 1200 ft.
