The Ardrossan Highland Games get underway in the morning with Highland Dancing competitions and Juvenile Solo Piping. The dancing comprises the traditional pieces like the Highland Fling, the famous Sword dance and the Seann Truibhas, Gaelic for "Old Trousers" with its historical significance celebrating the return of Scottish Culture.
The formal Opening of the Games start with a parade from the Lauriston Hotel to the games field where the Formal Opening of the Games is performed by the Chieftain of the day.
Then the big strong men take the field to throw their weight behind the Heavy Events like Tossing the Caber, throwing heavy weights high and long depending on the event. The Heavy Events climax with the ever popular Haggis Hurling. Meanwhile the Pipe Band Contest and Drum Major Competitions are in full swing before the final March Past and Prize Giving complete a splendid family day out.
