Blackness Castle was built by Sir George Crichton in the 1440s at the seaport serving the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, site of one of the main palaces of the Scottish monarch. The castle, together with the Crichton lands, passed to James II of Scotland in 1453, and the castle has been crown property ever since.
In 1537, King James V embarked on an ambitious programme to convert the castle into a mighty fortification just in time for the the ‘Wars of the Rough Wooing’.
The castle was one of the most advanced artillery fortifications of its time. However a century later, those defences were not enough to prevent Oliver Cromwell's heavy guns devastatingly forcing the surrender of the castle in 1650.
Blackness Castle is often referred to as ‘the ship that never sailed’ because of its appearance. From the seaward side it looks just like a great ship whose prow projects into the water with the three towers adding to the effect.
