The Dunfallandy Stone is a Pictish cross slab probably carved around the 8th century. A cross divided into panels of interlaced ornament and flanked by angels and beasts adorn the front, while on the back are seated figures to either side of a cross, a horseman, tools and five of the well known but enigmatic Pictish symbols, all framed between two serpents.
Since the Picts left no written records apart from a list of their kings, academics and historians have been arguing and debating the meanings and theories of Pictish symbolic language as artwork.
One popular theory is that the hammer, anvil and set of tongs represents a arriage between two families.
Opening Hours: The Stone is free to visit and open year-round.
