The Cullerlie stone circle, also known as the Standing Stones of Echt, is thought to have been built in the second millennium BC and is quite unique in design, though similar constructions were reported to be nearby in 1820 of which no trace can now be found.
Imagine the effort required to transport these stones across the surrounding landscape of wet bog as it would have been nearly four thousand years ago.
The circle comprises eight irregular stones of red granite arranged at approximately equal intervals with a diameter of 10.2m, enclosing the same number of small burial cairns. The whole circle sits on a patch of gravel which forms the end of a low gravel ridge linking the site with Leuchar Moss.
Opening Hours: Cullerlie Stone Circle is open year-round.
