Castle Kennedy & Gardens is in a part of Scotland surrounded on three sides by the sea, and the influence of the Gulf Stream provides a micro climate not found in many other parts of the United Kingdom. These lavish gardens set in 75 acres of outstanding natural beauty on an isthmus between two lochs were laid out in 1730 around the ruins of Castle Kennedy, it's replacement Lochinch Castle, the private home of the Earl and Countess of Stair is also in the grounds. The gardens are internationally famous for their varied species of rhododendrons, including many of Sir Joseph Hooker's original introductions from his Himalayan expedition. Along with a vast collection of azaleas, magnolias and embrothriums they give spectacular vibrancy in late May and June. The annual display of colour in the Walled Garden is a highlight, while autumn sees the mature beech in the gardens against the beautiful back of larch on the hills. The carpet of snows is a must-see in late winter.
