The reserve at the Mull of Galloway, the most southerly part of Scotland, contains an amazing abundance of wildlife. This small circular walk offers an incredible number and variety of different species. Some rare UK butterflies are restricted to this mild southern coastline of Scotland.
The path leads to the Mull of Galloway Visitor Centre where it is worth spending time with the informative staff. You will reach steep steps down to the unused foghorn, a good viewing platform from where you may see many sea birds, including the delightful puffin.
From here you can look across to the Isle of Man. The views along the cliffs are spectacular, of rocks and sea, flowers and birds, the last two being more prolific during spring and early summer. From here you are often able to see across to Ireland's Antrim Hills and the Mountains of Mourne. In the autumn the Mull provides an important resting place for southbound birds. In the winter you will see this Scottish coast at its most dramatic.
Opening Hours: Full café menu and meals available at neighbouring Gallie Craig café. 11:00 - 16:00
The lighthouse is open at weekends to the public from April to September.
