Schiehallion, at 1083m is a Munro that has it all. The Gaelic name Sìdh Chailleann means "Fairy Hill of the Caledonians". It has a rich botanical life, interesting archaeology, and a unique place in scientific history and discovery with an 18th-century experiment to 'weigh the world'. The mountain, isolated from other peaks enhancing a famous conical shape when viewed across from Loch Rannoch, is popular with walkers due to its accessibility, ease of ascent and spectacular views of Ben Alder, the Forest of Atholl and more.
Schiehallion was chosen for a ground-breaking experiment in the 18th century. Based on Newton's "Law of Universal Gravitation" an estimate of the mass of the Earth and Newton's Gravitational constant G were determined in addition to Contour Lines being devised.
