This unique villa, built in 1857-8, has been described as Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's finest domestic design, with many rooms richly ornamented in wood, plaster and marble. Thomson's original room decoration, based on themes from the classical world, is being uncovered and visitors may follow the progress of this conservation work.
Holmwood is considered to be immensely influential by architectural historians, because the design as published in“Villa and Cottage Architecture: examples of country and suburban residence recently erected”in 1868 may have influenced proto-modernist architects.
Constructed for James Couper, a paper manufacturer who owned the Millholm paper mill in the valley of the White Cart River immediately below the villa, the principal rooms were orientated towards the view of Cathcart Castle, sadly now demolished.
Opening Hours: 23 March - 31 October
