In terms of audience capacity, the Edinburgh Playhouse is the largest working theatre in the UK, seating more than 3,000 people over three levels. The exterior is deceiving as on first sight you will be left wondering how so many people can be comfortably seated in such a small building. The Grand Circle is on the street level and the Stalls are accessed by steps down.
Originally designed and build principally as a cinema but with theatre in mind, it opened its doors in the late 1920s. It has a large stage and a full size fly tower. The building itself is now a Grade I Listed Building, having been originally modelled on the Roxy Cinema in New York.
