Western Gailes' pedigree dates back to 1897 and offers a mixture of traditional and modern golf. The course is highly rated in various league tables of worldwide courses. Severe bunker placement and natural contours of the land provide a challenging links experience. The course is one of the narrowest links courses with the beach at Irvine Bay on one side and the ralway track on the other. The greens are fast, firm and subtly contoured. The 14th hole, a wonderful par five which often plays downwind, provides a huge temptation for big hitters, but numerous bunkers lie in wait.
There are times when the course can be soul destroying, especially with a ferocious westerly wind cunningly switching direction to and fro for the unwary. At such time it is considered that the spelling is incorrect as it should be Western Gales.
